Novatein is a company formed by WaikatoLink Limited, the technology transfer office of The University Of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand. Novatein's technologies are the result of leading research conducted at The University of Waikato. Under the guidance of Dr Johan Verbeek. Novatein's breakthrough process for manufacturing commercially useful plastic from animal protein sources offers a sustainable alternative to petroleum based plastic resins.

The global plastics market is US$1,052 billion. The bio-plastics sector is 5-10% of the total market, with a compounded annual growth rate of 19%.
Corporate responsibility, international governmental pressure, and a growing consumer awareness of the effects of petrochemical plastics on the environment is driving growth in this market. Bloodmeal as the main feedstock for Novatein's process is in abundant supply.
In late 2007, Novatein was successful in attracting investment from venture capital firm Endeavour Capital. This has allowed the company to develop and refine its processes.
